Getting Another Hook Involved

I am jealous of knitters—the patterns, elevated aesthetics, and knitting’s reputation in the yarn world as the highest form of the craft.
But, I love the hook.
Tunisian crochet produces the fine weave and complexity that I normally associate with knitting. The resulting textiles have the potential to translate into an array of garments. In fact, because they are worked from the facing side in forward and return passes, as opposed to rotating the work, Tunisian crochet cloth seems more appropriate for these types of projects. It’s not like the reverse side is that bad, just rough compared to the elaborate weave of the right side. See the image below on the left that shows both the front and back. Pattern by Toni Lipsey.
That said, I have found many lovely patterns for shawls and scarves. Triangle scarves in particular!? In addition, this video from Fiber Spider demonstrates rotating the work to create a double-sided scarf with an ombre effect and visual interest from both sides.

You might have to try different hooks to find what works best for you. A few things to keep in mind…you really want a hook with a smooth consistent diameter so that your work flows smoothly and produces even loops. This means no ergonomic handles or thumb depressions. Interchangeable hooks with cords work great for larger pieces. However, if you are working with a set, you’ll wind up using one size up or down from the recommended hook size in your pattern. I have heard that in this instance to use the smaller hook for return passes, so that you maintain your gauge with the recommended hook size.
I kind of like the single continuous double-ended hooks in longer lengths—using a fun “slip and slide” style for return passes. But, they are not super great for working in the round or stuffing into your carry-on.
